How to Choose the Right Type of Therapy: CBT, EMDR, DBT and More, in Plain English

"What kind of therapy do you do?" is a fair question, but the answers can sound like alphabet soup. Here's a plain-English guide to the most common approaches, so you can find one that fits what you're working through.

CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy The most widely used approach. It focuses on the link between your thoughts, feelings, and actions, and gives you practical tools to change unhelpful patterns. Often shorter-term and goal-focused, a common starting point for anxiety, depression, and stress.

DBT, Dialectical Behavior Therapy A cousin of CBT that adds skills for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, and improving relationships. Helpful when feelings run the show, or for self-harm urges.

EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Designed for trauma. It helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they lose their grip. If past events still feel "stuck" or keep intruding, EMDR is worth asking about.

ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Instead of fighting difficult thoughts, ACT helps you make room for them and take action toward what matters to you. Good for anxiety, chronic stress, and life transitions.

Psychodynamic therapy Goes deeper into patterns from your past and how they shape the present. Often longer-term, less about quick tools, more about lasting insight.

The most important ingredient isn't the acronym The relationship with your therapist matters as much as the method. A great fit using a "simpler" approach usually beats a poor fit using a fancy one. So use the approach as a filter, not a rule.
