The Right Vet for Your Animal
Your pet can't tell you where it hurts, so the right veterinarian matters. Here's how to choose one in 2026, for routine care and for emergencies. General information, not veterinary advice.
Two things to line up before you need them
- A regular vet for wellness visits, vaccines, and dental care, ideally close to home and accepting new patients.
- An emergency/after-hours plan, know the nearest 24-hour or ER veterinary hospital before a crisis, because your regular clinic may be closed.
Match the vet to your animal
Most pets are served by a general small-animal vet. But look for the right fit if you have an exotic pet (birds, reptiles, small mammals), large animals or horses (equine/farm vets), or a pet needing a specialist (cardiology, oncology, dermatology, surgery, usually by referral). A Fear Free / low-stress certified practice is worth seeking for anxious animals.
Questions worth asking
- Are you accepting new patients, and what species do you treat?
- How are emergencies handled during and after hours?
- What do routine visits and common procedures cost, and do you offer wellness plans?
- Which specialty hospital do you refer to?
