One Step Closer Therapeutic Horsemanship is a nonprofit adaptive-riding center in Morgan Hill, California, providing equine-assisted therapy and learning to individuals with disabilities and to U.S. military veterans. A faith-based, PATH International Premier Accredited center, it was named 2020 Non-Profit of the Year by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce and serves hundreds of participants each year with the help of trained volunteers. Programs: • Adaptive Riding Program — serves children and adults with special needs (autism, Down syndrome, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, traumatic brain injury, and more) to help them reach developmental and therapeutic goals. Participants typically attend a one-hour lesson once a week, individually or in small groups of 2–3, taught by a PATH International certified instructor. Runs Monday–Saturday, year round, in four 10-week seasonal sessions. • School Readiness Program — a riding curriculum for children ages 4–8 that uses games and tasks on horseback to address attention, speech and communication delays, following instructions, social interaction, and behavior, while building confidence, self-esteem, physical fitness, and safety awareness. • Veterans Program — equine-assisted sessions where veterans learn or relearn the value of communication, partnership, and connection, finding a pathway to reconnect with the world and one another. • G.R.I.T. Women's Group — a newer program designed to develop self-awareness and self-acceptance, confidence and resilience, and safe boundaries, modeled on the Veterans Program and built around equine interaction and equine-assisted learning. One Step Closer is a 501(c) nonprofit (Tax ID 16-1774140); contributions are tax-deductible. The center is closed for major holidays and during extreme weather.
