Dr. Monika Tangney is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy and founder of Active Wellness Physical Therapy in Encinitas, in North County San Diego. She completed a BS in Kinesiology at SDSU and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine, and began her career in orthopedics treating post-operative patients, sports injuries and older adults. After the birth of her first son, she shifted toward women's health, and for the past seven years her focus has been pelvic floor physical therapy for pregnant and postpartum patients and women with a wide range of pelvic floor dysfunction. Conditions treated include pregnancy pelvic pain, perineal, tailbone and pubic symphysis pain, painful intercourse, vaginismus, pelvic organ prolapse, stress and urge urinary incontinence, interstitial cystitis, constipation, diastasis recti and recovery after hysterectomy, along with orthopedic issues such as low back and neck pain, sciatica, disc herniation, ligament tears, joint replacement, TMJ and migraines. Treatment combines therapeutic exercise with manual approaches such as myofascial, joint, visceral and scar mobilization, cupping and therapeutic massage, plus birth preparation, nursing posture, baby-wearing and return-to-exercise education. Every session is one-on-one with Dr. Monika, with no aides or techs. The practice is out of network and does not bill insurance directly; superbills are provided on request and HSA cards are accepted.
