About this event

Marked on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout encourages people who smoke to take a meaningful first step by quitting for the day and building a plan to quit for good. Because smoking is among the most preventable causes of serious illness and death, the campaign focuses on one achievable goal that can jump-start lasting change. Around the observance, health systems, employers, colleges, health departments, and community groups nationwide host free awareness events, resource fairs, and support activities. The American Cancer Society backs it up with free quit resources such as the Empowered to Quit email program and a round-the-clock helpline. There is no cost to participate, and everyone is welcome, whether you're ready to quit yourself or helping someone you care about take that step.
